Humans have been visibly repairing garments and household fabrics for thousands of years, with distinct styles and methods emerging across a wide variety of cultures. These techniques have represented not only practical functions, but also aesthetic trends.
The practice of mending is both grounding and deeply gratifying. Investing in our belongings brings a richness to the objects around us. In filling our homes and adorning our bodies with tended-to items, we create an atmosphere of care.
Over the past six years I have mended garments and textiles by hand for family, friends, and others in my community. Practicing mending builds upon my instinctive drive towards collaborative making and desire for tending to loved objects. While I specialize in visible mending, I also offer invisible repairs and minimally invasive textile restoration.
Mending is a crucial act of care; the decision that something is worth fixing.
